Fans and players come out in support of McPhail

Cardiff City’s Stephen McPhail has been diagnosed with stage one malt lymphoma.

The midfielder will undergo treatment, expected to last for three weeks, with the hope of a return to football by January.

Malt lymphoma is a relatively rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and develops in lymphatic tissue such as the stomach, thyroid glands, lungs or the eyes. It is mostly caused by a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori and can be treated by a course of intensive antibiotics.

McPhail has made 10 appearances for Cardiff this season, but was sidelined at the start of the month in the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest with a thigh injury that required surgery.

Bluebirds legend Andy Legg is also cancer survivor. He said: “If he needs me, I’m here. He’s a fit lad; they’ve caught it in the early stages so that’s good news. I wish him all the luck in the world."

McPhail’s midfield teammate Gavin Rae also offered his support, saying: "He’s got everyone’s support here. It certainly puts football into perspective; all the players and staff at the club are rooting for him."

The club have requested that Stephen's privacy is respected during his treatment and recovery but supporters have been pouring in their get-well-soon messages on the club’s message board: www.cardiffcitystadium.co.uk/mb.

Jamie Roberts has warned his Wales team-mates that Australia will fight back like a 'wounded animal' in Cardiff.

The Wallabies suffered a shock 9-8 defeat to Andy Robinson’s Scotland at Murrayfield.
But the British Lions star centre, who fractured his skull in a clash with Stirling Mortlock in last season's 21-18 triumph, admits he expects another battle royale next Saturday.

Roberts, 23, said: "It was a huge win for Scottish rugby and the weather conditions suited them down to the ground. But that result will make it tougher for us. It’s always harder to play a side who have just lost.

"Australia will come here like a wounded animal and play with extra fire. It’s a challenge we are looking forward to."

After a Shane Williams-inspired 33-16 win over Argentina, head coach Warren Gatland has also admitted his side need to raise their game for the showdown with Robbie Deans' men at the Millennium Stadium.

Gatland said: "We will definitely have to step up a level next week. Last year we beat Australia and we deserved the victory. But, having dealt with Australians before, I know they will be smarting from that defeat. It will make them even more determined to win.

"It will be nice to show another level of work in training and in our performance next weekend to make sure we improve from game to game."

Shane Williams claims his 50th international try against Argentina has simply made him hungrier for more.

Wales’ record try-scorer bagged a brace of tries in the drubbing of the Pumas in Cardiff.

The landmark strike at the Millennium Stadium puts Williams ahead of All Blacks great Doug Howlett and into joint-third place alongside former England flying wing Rory Underwood on the all-time try-scoring list.

But deadly wing wizard Williams, who has struck 48 times for Wales and twice for the British Lions, insists there is plenty more to come.

Williams, 32, said: "It’s a great honour and I’m really pleased to score 50 tries.

"It will be great to tell the children and grandchildren when I hang the boots up but I am just as happy when I scored my first try for Wales.

"The accolade of scoring the number of tries is just a bonus to me and I won’t let the feat affect me. I never expected it would happen and it still feels mad. I don’t want to get carried away because I feel there is more tries in me.

"Hopefully I get picked to face Australia next weekend and if I score to become the greatest in the northern hemisphere, then I’ll be a happy man."

Only Japan’s Daisuke Ohata with 69 tries and Australian legend David Campese stand in the way of Williams becoming the greatest finisher of all-time.

And the Ospreys ace admits he has Campese, on 64 touchdowns, in his sights ahead of the mouth-watering clash with the Wallabies next Saturday.

Williams added: “When you look back in history to the likes of Campese, it’s a massive honour for me to be mentioned alongside quality players like him.

“I’m still enjoying my rugby and believe I’m capable of scoring even more – it’s my job.

“I want to get up to David Campese one day and I hope number 50 wasn’t the last of my tries. I want people to be talking about my 51st and 52nd tries and so on.”

Fly-half Stephen Jones set Warren Gatland’s men on their way with an opportunist first-half touchdown in a 17-point haul while Argentina centre Martin Rodriguez scored all the visitors’ points as Wales eased home.

Police witness appeal after A48 Newport collision

Gwent Police is again appealing for information following a collision between a pedestrian and a Black VW Bora car at approximately 8.12pm on Wednesday, November 18.

The collision occurred at the A48 Usk Way SDR Newport, adjacent to the Transporter Bridge. The car was travelling toward Spytty Road when the collision occurred.

The pedestrian, a 12 year old local girl, was seriously injured and remains in a critical condition. She has now been transferred to the University Hospital, Cardiff.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or who saw children playing around the Transporter Bridge at around 8.00pm is asked to call Gwent Police by ringing 101 or the Collision Investigation witness line 01633 642 404.

Mongolian ambassador gets warm Welsh welcome

Pupils at Prendergast School made a special effort when they received a VIP recently.

They took the trouble to find out the spelling of the world ‘welcome' in Mongolian so that they could offer a friendly greeting to that country's Ambassador when he visited the school.

His Excellency Bulgaa Altangerel was in Pembrokeshire with his wife, Mrs Erdenee Chuluuntsetseg, to attend a concert organised by Soroptimists International (SI) of Fishguard and District.

One of the organisation's members, Sally Francis - a former headteacher at Mount Airey School in Haverfordwest - is working as an educational advisor with Voluntary Services Overseas in Mongolia.

Her Soroptimist colleagues in Fishguard offered to organise the concert as part of an International Evening to raise funds for the children of the Twelfth School in Darkhan - Mongolia's second city.

Aged between six to 16, their parents are nomadic herders whom they only see a few times a year. Some are orphans and they all live at the school where conditions are basic in the extreme with little or no play equipment.

Both His Excellency and his wife were delighted to visit Prendergast School and meet the pupils.

Earlier they had been guests of Pembrokeshire County Council Chairman, Councillor Anne Hughes, in County Hall.

There they met the Mayor of Fishguard, Councillor Gwilym Price and Mrs Price, and the President of the SI Fishguard and District, Pat Roblin and her Soroptimist colleagues. Jordan Evans, chairman of the Pembrokeshire Youth Assembly, was also present.

Charteris: Still work to do to match the best

Luke Charteris admits Wales must improve if they are to complete the Invesco Perpetual Series with a victory over Australia.

Charteris played an integral role in the 33-16 win over Argentina at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday which saw the hosts run in three opportunistic tries.

Now the Newport Gwent Dragons lock believes Wales will need to be better against the Wallabies in Cardiff this weekend.

Charteris, 26, said: "I felt we did well. I enjoyed it and I certainly want to go out there again. It's been a tough month, we've all worked hard and everyone in the squad wants to be involved against the Wallabies.

"We managed to get a good win against a very good team, but we know we need to get better. If we want to beat the likes of New Zealand and Australia we have to improve.

"We're happy with the performance, we played well and dominated the game but there are still more gears we can go to and we hope we can show that against Australia next week."

Charteris was also keen to praise the Welsh front row, who were expected to struggle against the Pumas.

He added: "The front row was outstanding. I thought Paul James, Gethin Jenkins and Matthew Rees did really well. There was a lot of talk in the week about how they were going to run us backwards but we held our own.

Charteris put in a notable performance himself and made use of all of his 6ft 9ins frame to make the charge down which led to Shane Williams' first try.

Charteris added: "I did all the hard work and Shane just had to run it in! But it's something Ive been working on and lucky enough it came off.

"Shane is a quality player and world class. For the first try he could have run straight to the corner but he decided to beat four or five people just for fun. He's probably the only person in world rugby who could do that."

Welsh volunteers return from Cumbria rescue work

Rob Schoffield and Gareth Protheroe, volunteer lifeboat crew members from Flint, were part of the 40 strong RNLI National Flood team drawn from North Wales and the North of England dealing with flood relief in Cockermouth.

Rob and Gareth only signed up to the team on Wednesday night, and Thursday morning found themselves en route to Cumbria with other volunteer crew members from Criccieth, Conwy, Llandudno, Moelfre, Rhyl, Beaumaris and Pwllheli.

RNLI teams arrived on scene at 10pm on Thursday, November 19. They worked through the night in horrendous conditions, evacuating people from their homes in Cockermouth, where flood water was surging through the streets at speeds up to 25 knots; in the centre of the town water levels had reached 2.5 metres (8ft 2in).

RNLI inshore lifeboats are capable of operating in the current conditions as they have engines strong enough to cope with the speed of the water. Other craft had to be grounded due to the severe conditions.

Members of the volunteer crew at Flint are no strangers to inland flood rescue, having been involved in Towyn and Kinmel Bay in 1990, and Mold in 2000. They have also been deployed to Ruthin, Wrexham, and the upper reaches of the River Dee on several other occasions.

Alan Forrester volunteer lifeboat operations manager at Flint lifeboat station said: "We only had the meeting on Wednesday to set up RNLI National Flood Rescue Team, I was really pleased that both Gareth and Rob signed up as they are both RNLI ‘Swift Water Trained Volunteers’ but somewhat shell-shocked when they were both deployed to Cockermouth the following day."

Alan continued, "As part of the RNLI team that dealt with flood relief in Towyn and Kinmel Bay in 1990 I am well aware of the difficulties for both rescued and rescuers, and our thoughts are with the people of the affected areas."

Mumbles lifeboat rescues surfer in trouble

Mumbles inshore lifeboat was launched Friday afternoon amid the stormy seas which have battered South Wales over the last few days. Following reports of a surfer in difficulty near Langland Bay just before sunset Swansea Coastguard requested the launch to a man seen drifting out to see by witness’s walking the cliffs.

This is just one of many calls the RNLI have received over the past few days following the strong winds and heavy rain which have had such a dramatic effect on the UK.

James Bolter who was at the helm of the inshore lifeboat said:

‘We experienced very rough seas and luckily the people who reported the surfer in danger directed us to him via Swansea Coastguard, he’d been caught by a very strong riptide off Langland which had rapidly taken him almost a mile offshore.’

Tim Conway, RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager at The Mumbles says:

‘These are just the kind of conditions this boat was designed for and its crew trained for, the 28 yr old casualty had endured strong tides and suffered cramp in very big surf. Within minutes we were able to locate him and return him safely to the beach at Langland.'

The RNLI has set a £150,000 fundraising target over the next three years towards a new £2.7m Tamar class boat for Mumbles. The Tamar lifeboats are the most advanced vessels operated by the RNLI, providing all weather rescue capabilities and will replace the current Tyne class rescue boat that currently serves Mumbles. The new boat will carry an inshore lifeboat onboard in addition to the one located on station.

Gladstone's in the bag at Flintshire Record Office

Fighting high business rates in Narberth

An action plan to fight the 200%+ business rates hike in Narberth is beginning to take shape.

South Pembrokeshire AM Angela Burns has now met local government minister Brian Gibbons and been told that he is considering raising the rates threshold.

"However he was extremely adamant that there was no way they would postpone the rates review," she said.

"He made it clear that businesses have got until April to try to renegotiate their levels and then after that date they can appeal. But by then they should have paid the first instalment and I know that businesses are extremely worried about their cash flow while any appeals go through.

"I had a meeting last week with a business owner in the town who said he was going to close after Christmas because he cannot afford his enormous rate rise."

Two weeks ago Mrs Burns called a public meeting in the town at which the Valuation Agency Office (VAO), which set the rates, promised to review the situation.

A working party made up of representatives from different types of businesses from the town is now being set up by Narberth Chamber of Trade. It aims to collect evidence to show that the increase is disproportionate to present to the VAO.

A petition for concerned traders to sign is being drawn up and it will then be sent to the Welsh Assembly’s petitions committee.

"Every petition is carefully considered by the committee so it is vital that we get the wording right as they only look into exactly what is petitioned for," added Mrs Burns.

“Now that I have had a chance to talk to Mr Gibbons we can ensure that we do.”

South Pembrokeshire’s Conservative parliamentary candidate Simon Hart, who lives near Narberth, is also helping to collate the petition.

"In almost every shop you go into in town the traders are talking about the rates situation and I have heard of at least one that says it will close if the situation isn’t remedied," he said.

"Everyone is keen to work together to fight this increase."

Warning on council tax phone scam

Flintshire County Council is asking residents to be on their guard following reports of a phone scam targeting Council Tax payers across North Wales.

Bogus callers are telephoning tax payers advising that they can help them claim a refund of overpaid Council Tax and to arrange a refund into their bank account.

David Barnes, Council Tax Manager said, "I would like to stress that this is a scam designed to obtain peoples bank account details. We would advise residents never to give their personal banking details over the phone, unless they are totally sure that they are speaking to a genuine caller.

If you are in any doubt, take the caller's number and check that they are genuine, before calling back."

Any suspicious calls of this nature should be reported to the police.

Chuck Berry gig postponed until the spring

Chuck Berry fans will have to wait until the spring to see the rock and roll legend live in Swansea.

A gig that had been arranged for the Brangwyn Hall on Wednesday December 2 has now been postponed until March 2010.

Promoters of the Chuck Berry tour have announced similar postponements throughout the UK.

Tickets already purchased will be valid for the new gig but anybody who would like to have a refund can do so at their original point of purchase.

Details of the new concert date will be confirmed as soon as possible.

Dafydd Wyn wins the 2009 John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry

The 2009 John Tripp Award for Spoken Poetry came to a head on Thursday 19 November as Academi hosted the much anticipated Grand Final in Cardiff. An unprecedented number of supporters, writers, literary enthusiasts and those who were just curious flocked to The Wharf to see who would be named Wales’ best performance poet. Following a dash for extra chairs, stools and with people almost literally hanging from the rafters the scene was finally set, the finalists chosen, the judges poised and the bar, luckily, fully stocked.

MC Ifor Thomas led what proved to be an evening full of diverse and original poetry performances from 16 new and familiar faces to the performance scene. Judging the competition were 2009 Wales Book of the Year winner Deborah Kay Davies, poet and Editor of New Welsh Review, Kathryn Gray, and Wiard Sterk Executive Director of independent public art consultancy Safle.

The competition was intense but only one poet could walk away with the title and the First Prize of £500. It was experience and a traditional approach to performance poetry however which won out in the end as the judges picked Dafydd Wyn from Ammanford as the overall winner. Dafydd Wyn, who performed a series of three heartfelt poems about his nephew, has published two novels including a children’s book The M4 Cats (Lolfa 2008). As well as teaching English in London, Bala and at Ystalyfera he is also a former Mayor of Cwmaman and a former runner-up in the John Tripp Award.

It was the “verbal pyrotechnics” of the Grand Final’s youngest competitor Liam Johnson, though, which landed him both the judges’ Runner-up prize and the coveted Audience Prize voted for on the night by the throng of literary enthusiasts in attendance. 19 year-old Liam, who is currently studying English and Creative Writing at UWIC University, started writing poems and lyrics at fifteen and states the Beat Generation as his most significant influence. After making such an impression in his first performance poetry competition Liam is definitely one to watch for the future.

Exiles march on in FA Trophy

NEWPORT COUNTY squeezed themselves into the first round proper of the FA Trophy with a narrow 2-1 win over Braintree Town at Spytty Park.

The game was played in miserable conditions but County made the best of them, building a two-goal first-half lead with the wind at their backs. The second-half was always going to be a test, but the Exiles held on to progress.

With quality football at a premium it was two set piece goals that put County into Monday’s draw, when teams from the Blue Square Premier enter the competition.

The opening goal, midway through the first-half, was fortuitous. Kerry Morgan swung a free-kick from the left into a crowded penalty area and the inswinging delivery completely deceived Braintree goalkeeper Dave Blackmore to curl into the bottom right-hand corner.

It wasn't long before Morgan turned provider with another free-kick from the left. He floated the ball into the penalty area where Dave Gilroy - returning from a profitable loan spell with Weston-super-mare - rose well to place a glancing header into the bottom-right hand corner from six yards.

However, County were made to battle for their victory as Braintree used their turn with the wind behind them to pile on the pressure throughout the second-half. An early goal for the visitors was the last thing County needed, but they failed to deal with a long throw-in from the right and George Purcell slid in to finish with a firm left-footed drive.

The home fans’ nerves reflected their side’s backs-to-the-wall performance as the game went on. County were defending deeper and inviting the visitors forward But Braintree lacked the incisiveness to profit and despite several shots couldn't find the equaliser.

The 3G's Portable Media project will go head to head on Thursday 26th November 2009 on ITV Wales News The 'Streets Ahead' Project run by Prestatyn and Meliden Community Action Group.

THE PROJECT

The project, based in Merthyr Tydfil, will provide media training for young people to increase their skills and raise self-confidence. The portable media centre will enable us to hold and deliver classes to the community, schools, adult centres, etc. This equipment will enable us to deliver structured learning which will involve community members making their own works such as films, music, graphic design and animation.

The media facility will provide an opportunity to support new initiatives that will have a substantial impact on the lives of community members in our area. Access to the arts, media, music and digital industries for our members through our activities will be created with the aim to provide a voice for local people, promoting learning and raising achievement in arts & media making for our members.

This project will have a massive impact on the local communities throughout South Wales, not only will it give local residents training opportunities, we will be able to gain access and engage with those who have so far been hard to reach. Many of these areas are high on the deprivation list and this project will give them the chance to access facilities that otherwise would not have been open to them, which could result in future job opportunities. Through other projects we have been involved in we know that projects such as these raise confidence & self esteem in the young people that are involved. It also gives withdrawn young people the chance to make new friends and gets them involved in team activities; it also gives them goals – something to look forward to.

Road safety concern at Merthyr children's centre

More than 40,000 children are killed or injured each year as result of road accidents. Most of these accidents happen near homes and many as a result of school gate parking or parking illegally where large numbers of children gather.

Concern was raised recently due to the increased volume of traffic surrounding the ICC, a high number of cars parked on yellow lines and non-permit holders parking in disabled bays, so with this in mind staff at Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council’s Cwm Golau Integrated Children’s Centre (ICC), Pentrebach decided to pilot a road safety campaign during November as part of the National Road Safety Awareness month.

The idea of the scheme was to highlight the dangers of parking dangerously and to raise awareness of road safety to parents/carers and centre users.

Staff wore high visible jackets and issued letters and road safety leaflets to all users encouraging them to be more aware of road safety. All persons found parking in non-designated areas were asked to move immediately.

Councillor Richard Thomas said: "I fully support the efforts of staff at Cwm Golau ICC in raising the profile of road safety. The safety of children and Centre users is of paramount importance to us, particularly in light of a recent accident in the Borough involving a child."

WAG proposals for more Welsh Olympic winners

Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones has outlined how the recommendations of an independent review into performance and excellence of sport in Wales will be taken forward at the debate in the National Assembly.

The report, which was produced by independent consultants and published in September, made an assessment of systems and processes that to support sport at the elite level in Wales. It also looked at the pathways in place to ensure that young talent is identified and brought forward in Wales.

Alun Ffred Jones said: "Sport is very important to very many people in Wales; to a degree our sense of national well-being rises and falls with the relative successes of our sports men and women, as if sporting success is a barometer for national spirit."

"This review acknowledges, that for a country our size, we are very successful and recognises the role that the Sport Council and our national sporting governing bodies have played in achieving that success"

"We have closely examined where the report says we can improve the systems and structures that are in place to support sport at the top-level in Wales and, working closely with the Sports Council and others, we will restate our policy and targets for elite sport in Wales in the coming months"

Philip Carling - the Chair of the Sports Council for Wales – looks forward to raising the bar:

"In 2008, we saw notable successes at the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games. And this year, we’ve seen promising performances – we’re World Champions in rugby sevens, Becky Brewerton made her second Solheim Cup appearance and Nicole Cooke won her tenth British road race title.

"And what’s even more promising is that younger athletes have made their mark this year. Swimmer Jazz Carlin and cyclist Becky James are beginning to make a name for themselves and both look set to feature at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next year. It augurs well not only for London 2012 but also when the Commonwealth Games arrive in Glasgow in 2014.

"We welcome the opportunity to review the current position to ensure that investment is targeted smartly and we look forward to working with the Welsh Assembly Government to identify appropriate funding to sustain and build on our track record. It is particularly timely as the UK is attracting major sporting events – including The Ryder Cup in 2010 – and it is crucial that Wales remains at the cutting edge of sporting excellence."

Free gyms for service men and women in the Vale

A scheme offering Service personnel, either living or staying in the area, free use of facilities at Vale of Glamorgan Council leisure and sports centres, has been extended until April 2011.

The council cabinet move follows a six-month trial during which members of the armed services were provided with access to the authority’s extensive and popular leisure facilities.

After hearing from cabinet member for leisure and tourism Cllr Anthony Ernest that a barrier to participation appeared to be difficulties for personnel in obtaining the required ‘formal leave letters,’ the cabinet agreed to accept proof of Armed Services ‘membership’ and the signing of an ‘honesty pledge.’

Cllr Ernest added: "By continuing this scheme, which provides an opportunity for individuals to remain active during leave periods, the council is showing its commitment to the highly valuable and dangerous work being carried out by our Service personnel. It is a small way of thanking them for their duty and dedication."

Guiders from the area have been presented with a series of awards at a special reception hosted by Vale of Glamorgan Mayor Cllr Emlyn Williams.

Paying tribute to the work of the movement, Cllr Williams said: "These awards recognise the tremendous achievements of the trained volunteers who do so much to deliver a stimulating and enjoyable programme for our enthusiastic youngsters."

The evening was organised in conjunction with Girlguiding Cardiff and East Glamorgan, and recipients of long service awards were: 50 years, Pat Edwards (South East Glamorgan Division), Norah Kendall (Penarth) and Fran Mitchell (Vale of Glamorgan); 30 years, Susan Leverton (Dinas Powys and Llandough); 20 years, Jane Rudd (Vale of Glamorgan), and 10 years, Amy Germon (Barry East) and Jane Prigg (Penarth). There was a Baden Powell Award for Rosemary Tuthill (Penarth).

Barry school kids get gold for going green

Pupils and staff at St Helen’s RC Junior School in Barry are enjoying a new green accolade - Yellow Pages Recycling Champions for Wales 2009.

St Helen’s, who came top in the medium schools category, are also looking forward to spending a well-earned £1,000 prize money.

The environmental campaign for schools is run by Yellow Pages working in partnership with the Woodland Trust and, locally, the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

The school’s 202 pupils recycled a massive 1,831 Yellow Pages directories when the new ones were delivered last year - equivalent to an impressive 9.06 old directories per pupil.

Fourteen local authorities across Wales ran the Yellow Woods Challenge, involving a total of 495 schools and 99,156 pupils. The recycling scores from local heats were entered into the Wales finals and resulted in success for St Helen’s.

St Helen’s headteacher Gavin Russ said: "We are so proud to be Welsh winners in this competition. I’d like to thank our local community who helped us collect so many Yellow Pages. The school eco-committee is currently helping to decide how to spend the prize money."

Congratulating the school on their achievement, Vale councillor Geoff Cox, cabinet member for visible and building services, said: "Taking the national title is a fantastic achievement for St Helen’s Junior School. The council’s ‘What’s in your bin?’ campaign aims to get us all reducing, reusing and recycling. The pupils and staff at this school, and their community, are shining examples of great local action."

For every pound awarded to schools in prize money, Yellow Pages has donated a matching pound to the Woodland Trust’s children’s tree planting campaign, ‘Trees For All.’

Awards for Barry young film makers

A team of young film makers from Barry Comprehensive School have lifted a top award.

The students’ success came in the best regional film (Vale of Glamorgan) category of this year’s media4schools film awards, sponsored by Sony UK.

The group, whose film was entitled Year Seven Cross Country, were George Crowther, Sam Adamson and Jack Williams (Year 12) and Alex Parker (Year 9).

They received their award from Vale of Glamorgan councillor Tony Hampton, the cabinet member for education and lifelong learning, who is also a Barry Comprehensive School governor. He said: "I was delighted to present the talented lads with a prize and certificate. It was also great that they had the opportunity to see their production on a big screen."

Now in their sixth year, the awards are a culmination of all the hard work schools put into their films and a great way of showcasing the talents of the budding film makers.

Schools from across South Wales competed to scoop top prizes in categories such as best edited film, best animation and the coveted best overall film.

Based in Cardiff, media4schools is a vocational learning-based media training initiative, which introduces a combination of TV programme production and enterprise for primary and secondary schools.

Consultation on Blaenavon World Heritage site

A six-week consultation has begun in Blaenavon, asking residents' views on studies relating to the World Heritage Site.

The studies include design guidance for development and conservation area appraisals of Blaenavon and Cwmavon conservation areas and it is proposed the documents will eventually be adopted as supplementary planning guidance.

The executive member for housing, planning and public protection, councillor Gwyneira Clark, said: "We urge residents to contact us and let us know their views on these studies, as they will assist in ensuring the continued protection and enhancement of the historic character of the World Heritage Site.

"The guide provides design and maintenance advice for buildings within the Torfaen boundaries of the site, including advice for the construction of new buildings, and guidance on alterations, repairs or extensions to existing buildings.

"The Blaenavon and Cwmavon conservation area appraisals identify the key assets, issues and outline recommendations for the management and enhancement of the areas in the future.

"They recommend extensions to the Blaenavon conservation area, and consider the potential designation of conservation areas at Forgeside and Glantorfaen."

The public consultation runs until Wednesday 30 December and a public drop-in session will be held on December 9 at the World Heritage Centre.

Rural grants on offer from Torfaen council

A local charity is the second Torfaen organisation to benefit from the Branching Out Fund.

All Creatures Great and Small Animal Sanctuary in Llanfrechfa has received a grant through the Torfaen Rural Development Plan (RDP) - a project delivered through a strategic partnership and a local action group, creaTe.

Val Taylor, a trustee of All Creatures Great and Small Animal Sanctuary, said: "We specialise in the care of unwanted and often abandoned or abused animals, with the aim of providing a caring service of the highest quality to help all animals in need.

"We are delighted to receive this funding as it will help us restore an old barn into a training and visitor facility. This new facility will eventually enable us to become more sustainable and will improve the standard of care we provide."

Local farmers, businesses and community groups can apply to creaTe for grants up to £5,000 to help develop enterprise through diversification activities.

In addition to the grant, the RDP team will work with All Creatures Great and Small Animal Sanctuary to help it through the planning process and access additional external funding to make the project a reality.

The RDP, which runs until 2013, is funded through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) and aims to:

Improve the quality of life in rural communities
Strengthen the farming and forestry industries
Safeguard and enhance Torfaen's environment and rural heritage
Foster competitive, sustainable businesses and thriving rural communities.

There are seven wards in Torfaen classed as rural and rural-based business in these areas could be eligible for grant from the Branching Out Fund. The wards are Llanyrafon South, Blaenavon, Abersychan, Cwmynyscoy, Llantarnam, Two Locks and Wainfelin.

Controls are set on the measured sessions, so that a maximum of 1,000 calories are burnt in each class. Participants are advised that they must not reduce their normal calories intake.

Cardiovascular machines, weight machines, body weight exercises, circuit training routines, fitball, abdominal exercises and free weight exercises can all be used during the sessions.

Care for young carers in RCT

Rhondda Cynon Taf Mayor Cllr Robert Smith was delighted to be asked to judge a competition to find the eye-catching artwork that will be used on the publicity and information material distributed by Cynon Valley Young Carers.

The material is being updated and given a fresh new look thanks to a Big Lottery Fund grant, ensuring information is up to date and relevant for the 75 young carers the scheme looks after.

Leanne Lemonheigh, 17, of Penrhiwceiber was chosen as the winner. She is a well-known carer within the groups and looks after her mother, who has mental health issues.

Selina Bunny, 14, of Penywaun, was the runner-up, she cares for her siblings, who have a range of learning difficulties.

The successful Cynon Valley Young Carers is based in the Hirwaun YMCA and offers support and information for some 75 people aged between eight and 18.

As well as practical support on issues such as financial issues and budget planning, the scheme also organises respite care and social events for the young people to give them the break they need.

Mayor Cllr Smith said: "I was honoured to be asked to judge the competition and look forward to seeing the new, improved information material when it is completed.

"It is essential our young carers have access to a wide range of information and support to assist them as they carry out their difficult roles. We are also committed to giving them the respite and social activities they need so they do not forget they are young people, as well as young carers.

"Schemes such as Cynon Valley Young Carers allows this and I am pleased to be able to show my support."

Warning on council tax phone scam

Powys residents are being warned of a potential scam involving people claiming to be from the local council tax office.

Powys County Council is issuing the warning following reports from other parts of Wales where people are making unsolicited telephone calls to householders asking for their bank account details. Householders were asked to hand over their details under the pretence they were due a council tax refund.

Tony Price from Powys County Council, explains: "This scam has now been reported in other parts of the Wales and UK so we want to ensure residents are aware of it.

"We do not make unsolicited calls to householders to ask for their bank account details. Only Powys County Council has the ability to arrange a council tax refund and we ask people to fill in specific forms in order to arrange this.

"Don’t give out your personal or private details unless you have instigated the call and are sure that the person you are speaking to is completely genuine."

The council advises that if you are uncertain if any caller is genuine, ask for the person's name and extension number, then call the council tax switchboard on 01597 827463 or 0845 602 7033 and ask to be put through to them.

SPecial measures for Powys primary

Penycae Community Primary School, near Ystradgynlais, has been placed in special measures by Estyn following its inspection in July 2009.

The Estyn report acknowledges that the school has many good features, but there are shortcomings in important areas and it does not provide value for money. Estyn have come up with nine recommendations in order for the school to improve in the areas inspected.

Senior officers from Powys County Council will be working in close partnership with the school in order to secure this improvement.

The school and the council will produce action plans, detailing steps to be taken to address the shortcomings identified by Estyn.

Alun Thomas, Chair of Governors for Penycae C.P.School, said: "Estyn has identified a number of shortcomings that we have to address if we are to improve the standard of education for our pupils. We have a lot of hard work in front of us, but with the support of staff, pupils, parents, governors and the council, I am confident that we will succeed.

"The governing body has already recognised the shortcomings and has acted proactively. A change in strategic leadership was implemented at the beginning of the academic year.

"This has resulted in immediate and significant improvements of opportunities for our children at Penycae School and this will continue until we are removed from special measures."

Cllr David Jones, Board Member for Schools and Inclusion, said: "We know what needs to be done to ensure that Penycae C.P. School is removed from the category of special measures as soon as possible and we will be working closely with the school and governing body to secure improvements.

"A project team of senior officers, school staff and the governing body has been established in order for this to happen."

Estyn will monitor the school on a termly basis until it is satisfied that the category of special measures no longer applies.

Newport housing take on young recruits

Newport City Homes (NCH) will shortly be welcoming seven new members of staff for six-month positions in its building trade and community involvement teams, as part of the Future Jobs Fund Project.

In partnership with Newport City Council, NCH has created a total of 30 placements for 18-24 year olds who have been claiming Job Seekers Allowance for between 39 and 51 weeks.

The positions, which will take place over the next 18 months, will allow the young person to gain work experience that delivers community benefit, to enhance their CV. At the end of the six-month placement, extra support will be offered to help the employees find permanent work.

In Newport, the Future Jobs Fund was launched in October and a total of 472 placements will be delivered across the city over the next 18 months.

The first phase of recruitment for the positions with NCH involved both staff and residents taking part in the interview and decision-making process.

Claire Douglas, Head of Community Regeneration and Involvement at NCH said: "The project has offered Newport City Homes a chance to offer work experience opportunities to young people in partnership with Newport City Council. It has also shown the commitment from the contractors that are working with us on the investment programme, with whom some of these placements will be made.

"We’re very grateful to the residents who gave their time to be involved in the recruitment to these posts. We've met some brilliant young people that have a lot to offer the organisation and the communities in which they will be working."

Ex-landlord loses licence over vodka scam

The perils of scamming drinkers with cheap spirits have been brought home to a former Anglesey landlord.

Harry Edward Bridge, of 54 High Street, Cemaes Bay, lost his licence to sell alcohol last week after being caught selling cheap spirits labeled as Smirnoff vodka.

During a routine visit to The Stag Inn in Cemaes Bay earlier this year, Trading Standards Officer found a bottle of Smirnoff vodka containing a cheap low strength spirit.

Mr Bridge, aged 62, who no longer runs the pub, pleaded guilty to two charges under the Food Safety Act, namely selling food (alcohol) not of the quality demanded and falsely describing the vodka on sale; and one charge of Trademark infringement, under the Trademarks Act.

Holyhead Magistrates ordered him to forfeit his personal licence to sell alcohol and pay a total of £450 in fines and costs.

Following the case brought by Anglesey Trading Standards, Principal Trading Standards Officer, Emma Jones, stressed, "Substituting branded spirits for cheaper alternatives is fraud, and will not be tolerated."

Environment portfolio holder, Councillor Bob Parry OBE, is responsible for trading standards matters. He added, "In the current economic climate, many people have a lot less disposable income and so the least they expect is to get what they pay for, and not to be charged full price for a cheap substitute. Our Trading Standards Officers will continue to visit premises on the Island to ensure that the public are not being ripped off and that they can buy with confidence."

Ammanford's carnival of lights

The skies of Ammanford will be lit up with a glittering array of lanterns at the start of the town’s Christmas festivities.

Local children are being encouraged to join in lantern-making workshops ahead of the town’s Christmas Carnival on Friday, December 4.

The lanterns will be released in to the night skies before the carnival parade to provide a magical backdrop to the evening’s activities, which include a walking parade and a grand fireworks display.

Father Christmas will also be brought in to town on a horse drawn carriage before he opens his Grotto in the Pensioner’s Hall.

Radio Carmarthenshire and Ammanford Town Band will provide a host of musical entertainment on the night, and a funfair and street entertainers, including balloon modelling and magic and Uncle Sam stilt walker, will provide plenty of fun and games for all the family.

The event is being organised as a partnership between Carmarthenshire County Council and Ammanford Town Council, and is sponsored this year by national housebuilder Taylor Wimpey.

Ammanford Town Mayor Cllr Irena Hopkins, said: "Ammanford Town Council is delighted to be working in partnership with the county council and Taylor Wimpey on this event, which we hope will be an enjoyable occasion for local families.

"We know that Father Christmas is looking forward to meeting children at his grotto at the Pensioner’s Hall, which is always a delightful part of Christmas in Ammanford."

New centre to help charity service bids

Welsh Assembly Finance Minister Andrew Davies has visited Carmarthen to officially launch a third sector procurement support unit.

The unit has been created to bring together relevant specialists from Carmarthenshire County Council, Carmarthenshire Association of Voluntary Services, Hywel Dda Health Board and various other partners to support the third sector when tendering for public service delivery contracts.

The unit will either be able to help with any procurement or commissioning related enquiries itself or will be able to help locate the appropriate support.

The unit was launched at The Mount, the voluntary resource centre run by CAVS in Carmarthen.

Cardiff alcohol and violence research wins top award

Pioneering Cardiff University research into violence, alcohol and late-night safety has been recognised with one of the highest awards in the academic world.

The University’s Violence and Society Research Group is among the winners of a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for excellence in higher education, announced on Wednesday at a ceremony at St James’s Palace, London. Her Majesty the Queen will present the award to the University at Buckingham Palace in February.

For more than a decade, the Research Group’s findings have been translated into practical action to tackle late-night injuries in city centres. A key part of winning the Award was the Group’s work in setting up the prototype Crime Reduction Partnership in Cardiff in 1996. Academics, health professionals, South Wales Police and Cardiff Council worked together to identify violence hot-spots. In this period, Cardiff became the safest city of its size in the UK. Following Government legislation, many other communities have now adopted Cardiff’s partnership model, now known in Wales as Community Safety Partnerships.

Other key achievements by the Group, which includes Cardiff University experts in surgery, medicine, psychology, business and statistics, are:

· Use of anonymised Accident and Emergency data to identify trends in late-night violence. This is used by Community Safety Partnerships and in the Group’s annual national violence survey
· New programmes of care for violence victims at every stage of their treatment, including a new service for post traumatic stress
· Identifying risk factors for violence – including crowd movements, levels of CCTV surveillance and the price of alcohol.
· Research on "glassing" injuries which has led to the introduction of toughened glass and plastic vessels in pubs and nightclubs
· Research leading to the creation of the Universities’ Police Science Institute – a collaboration between Cardiff University, Glamorgan University and South Wales Police, which combines practical policing research with police training
· International policy development for the World Health Organisation Violence Prevention Alliance

Welsh Assembly Government First Minister Rhodri Morgan said: "The Queen’s Anniversary Prize is one of the top honours a University can be awarded and Cardiff University should be really proud of their achievement.

"I would like to congratulate heartily Professor Jonathan Shepherd and his team because their work has made a real difference to so many people who live in and travel to the capital city of Wales to enjoy its attractions by night and day. It is important that these people feel safe and the University’s research into the cause of violent injury and possible pathways to reduction of harm is helping to achieve that.

"The Cardiff Violence Prevention Group was established to translate this research into practical action. The results of their work speak volumes – a 40 per cent decrease in violence levels in the Cardiff area."

The Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University, Dr David Grant said: “This is not just a triumph for Cardiff University, but for our entire community.

“The Violence and Society Research Group is a perfect example of how academic excellence can bring practical benefits. The team’s discoveries about the causes and consequences of violence have been recognised around the world as breaking new ground in research. This pioneering approach has then been put to work through the Cardiff Community Safety Partnership, creating a safer environment on our streets in a way which has now been adopted throughout the UK.

"Clearly, we at Cardiff University are delighted that Professor Shepherd and his team have achieved our fourth success in the Queen’s Anniversary Prizes - one of the most prestigious awards in higher education. We also believe that this is a success in which the NHS, South Wales Police, Cardiff Council and all our local partners can take pride."

Professor Jonathan Shepherd, of Cardiff University’s School of Dentistry and Director of the Research Group, said: "I first became concerned about this issue as a young surgeon treating the victims of facial injuries every week. It seemed amazing that many cases I saw were not being reported to the police. Over the years, my colleagues and I have worked to find practical solutions from health-based research. It is a great privilege to receive this Award, and hugely encouraging for our continuing work with our partners, locally, nationally and internationally in preventing community violence."

Cardiff’s success in the awards has also been welcomed by its partners:

South Wales Police Chief Constable Barbara Wilding said: “The University Violence and Society Research Group has been one of the key members of the Community Safety Partnership and together we have made great strides in tackling city centre violence and making Cardiff city a safer place. I am delighted that the research group has been the recipient of this prestigious award. Together with our partners we are now looking forward to extend this work throughout the whole of the South Wales area.”

Councillor Judith Woodman, Cardiff Council Executive Member for Communities, Housing and Social Justice, said: "I am delighted the Violence Research Group is being recognised with this prestigious award. The work undertaken has made a great deal of difference. The partnership of the group which has seen health, the Police and ourselves working closely together with licensees and academics to tackle violent crime has made our city safer for everyone and it is fantastic this success is being acknowledged."

David Francis, Chair of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and All-Wales Champion for reducing violence and aggression against NHS staff, said: "I want to congratulate Professor Shepherd and his Cardiff University colleagues on this achievement. It represents many years hard work and has resulted in many less injured people. This is an excellent example of partnership work, with the University and the Health Board working alongside local authority and police partners to make our streets safer and in supporting victims of violence and improving protection for staff from aggressors. Professor Shepherd’s work has been central to this success."

Griffiths plays 'tec on climate change crime scene

Wrexham's Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, played detective when WWF Cymru staged a Climate Crime Scene at the National Assembly in Cardiff Bay.

2009 is the most important year ever for our climate with UN negotiations concluding in Copenhagen next month.

To raise awareness of this critical time for action on climate change in the run-up to Copenhagen, WWF Cymru staged a Climate Crime Scene at the Senedd on November 17.

WWF Cymru staged the outline of a life-sized polar bear cordoned off by police tape to depict the possible sign of things to come – unless we tackle climate change now. WWF invited members of the Welsh Assembly Government and visitors and staff to the Senedd to view the crime scene and to sign up to our petition for a strong global deal to be agreed in Copenhagen in December to help secure a safe future for the planet.

Lesley Griffiths AM said:

"WWF Cymru has demonstrated with this innovative photo call what the future holds unless climate change is tackled now. Climate change left unchecked will have devastating impacts for people and wildlife across the planet.

"2009 is the most important year for Climate Change – we simply must secure a strong deal between nations in Copenhagen in December to seriously tackle this problem. I ask the people of Wrexham to sign up to WWF’s campaign to show their support and help safeguard our planet."

The Climate Crime Scene photo call formed part of the launch of WWF-Cymru’s second Climate Witness Jerry Percy. Jerry is the Chief Executive of the Welsh Federation of Fishermen’s Associations and he became a climate witness to highlight the concerns that Welsh fishermen have about how climate change is impacting on marine life, the fishing industry and ultimately our nation.

The Climate Witness is a WWF international programme that documents real life accounts from people across the world who are already experiencing climate change.

Welsh Climate Witness Jerry Percy joins WWF Cymru’s first Climate Witness farmer Wyn Evans from Pembrokeshire who became a Climate Witness earlier this year. Wyn’s account revealed how climate change is affecting agriculture.

Capacity crowds flocked to the Millennium Stadium when Wales kicked off the 2009 RBS Six Nations tournament with a victory over England on Valentine's Day and for a nail-biting clash with Ireland in the tournament finale.

FESTIVE season fans are being asked to pick their favourite float from Swansea's Christmas Parade.

The Ishtah Belly Dancers, Mayhill Community Centre, the GSP Community Project and Swansea City Bravehearts were among those to take part in the event.

Over 26,000 people lined the streets between The Guildhall and The Dylan Thomas Centre to enjoy the Christmas Parade and the annual switch-on of the Christmas lights.

A prize of £1,000 is available to the most popular float thanks to The Wave and Swansea Sound.

Swansea Council will also give a £250 prize to the most popular walking procession.

Nigel Jones, Swansea Council's Strategic Events Manager, said: "It was wonderful to see so many people watching the parade and getting into the festive spirit.

"The community groups who take part in the parade each year put so much effort into their floats and walking processions and this really helps to boost seasonal atmosphere."

Some of the walking groups that took part were the Habibi Dancers, Interplay and Mentro Allan.

New youth helpline launched

A new National Advocacy and Advice service for children and young people, backed with £459,850 of new Welsh Assembly Government funding, has been announced by Children’s Minister Jane Hutt.

The helpline will be the first of its kind in the UK to be rolled out on a national basis and will give children and young people the opportunity to get help on issues important to them if they feel they are not being listened to or getting the support they need. The helpline will be available through:

e-mail and
instant messaging.

The Advocacy and Advice Service will work with and compliment other advice services and helplines such as Childline which have a prominent safeguarding role.

The announcement comes on the 20th anniversary of the UNCRC. At a celebratory event to mark the UNCRC anniversary the Minister also launched a major new Action Plan ‘Getting it right’, which sets out how we will make important steps to make children and young people’s rights a reality over the next 5 years in Wales.

Key actions in the plan include:

Addressing negative perceptions of children and young people particularly in the media – through promoting positive achievements of children and young people and celebrating the success that they achieve
Working to eliminate all types of bullying - through new anti bullying guidance and the promotion of initiatives such as anti bullying week
Ensuring all children have the right to play - through developing a new play policy and providing more opportunities for children and young people to engage in the music, arts and sport.

First Minister Rhodri Morgan who also addressed the 20th Anniversary UNCRC event added:

"My Government has made it clear that we are determined to ensure that our children and young people can access and enjoy their rights.

"We want to make sure that children and young people can get help when they need it from people who can support and represent them and their views.

"We are working hard to help the children and young people of Wales to live healthier, more enjoyable and fulfilling lives. I am optimistic that the policies and programmes we have in place will help deliver our obligations to the children and young people of Wales."

Jane Hutt said:

"In Wales we use the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child as the basis for all our work with and for children and young people. We are committed to giving a legislative basis to this work, and the First Minister recently announced our intention to explore further the possibility of introducing a Measure to embed the principles of the UNCRC into law on behalf of Welsh children.

"We must support children and young people through difficult times when they may need more support. Articles 12 and 13 of the UNCRC state that children have the right to have their voices heard and to receive and share information.

"The advocacy and advice service I have announced today supports children and young people to do just that. It will be more than an information service. It will provide advice and find services for children and young people to help them in all sorts of situations. It is about giving them practical assistance and support when things become particularly difficult and if they feel they are not getting the help they need or are entitled to."

University of Glamorgan strengthens Chinese ties

A delegation from the Glamorgan Business School recently visited Xi’an University of Finance and Economics (XUFE) in China in order to strengthen the ties between the two institutions.

Marlene Davies, Head of the Division of Accounting and Finance, and Alison Lane, MSc Accounting Scheme Leader, spoke with colleagues from XUFE about students coming over to Glamorgan Business School to study.

These discussions were the latest in a series following a University visit to China in May and a visit by XUFE to us in October.

During their visit Marlene and Alison met with the President of XUFE Mr Hu Jian, the Vice President Mr Wang Guolian and the Deans of the various faculties within the Business School. These talks helped to reaffirm our links with XUFE and allow students the opportunity to study Accounting and Finance degrees at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels at Glamorgan Business School.

Marlene and Alison also met with a range of students who were all very keen to take advantage of the opportunity and study with us in 2010.

Glamorgan businesses backing education for success

In an innovative approach to creating the business leaders and entrepreneurs of tomorrow three local companies are putting up £2,000 of their own money to sponsor students to study degrees at the University of Glamorgan Business School.

Led by Pontypridd-based company Complete Background Screening (CBS) - Rachel Bedgood (left) of CBS with Monica Gibson-Sweet, Dean of the Glamorgan Business School School - is the scheme launch this week offers a unique package of financial support and mentoring for aspiring business men and women.

The Business Opportunities Scheme, known as BOSS, will award scholarships to students who can demonstrate a unique flair for business as well as a passion for the subject.

Applicants must be committed to studying at the University’s Business School from September 2010 in any area of business including management, entrepreneurship, marketing, human resource management, accounting and supply chain and logistics.

The winning applicant will be awarded £1,000 by CBS to help with the cost of their studies. In addition there will be two scholarships of £500 awarded to the runners-up and funded by The Big Country Adventures Ltd and local entrepreneur Clayton Jones.

As well as providing financial support, the companies participating will provide support as a mentor to the successful winners as well as work experience opportunities.

Rachel Bedgood Director of CBS said: "As a company we are keen to invest in the business talent of the future, and this scholarship programme is an excellent way of us supporting the best students. I hope that over the coming years more companies will sign up to the BOSS scheme so that we can extend the awards to a greater numbers of students."

Christmas shopping gets a sparkle in Swansea

A fun event is taking place in Swansea city centre this weekend to boost seasonal spirits.

The Wave will be on hand outside the former Woolworth building on Lower Oxford Street between 10am and 2pm on Saturday, November 21, to help support independent traders in the area and promote the Love Your City campaign.

An outdoor broadcast will take place from a Christmas chalet to raise awareness of the Christmas Market on Oxford Street from November 27 to December 13. Stalls at the forthcoming market will include gifts such as Welsh fruit, wines and liqueurs, jewellery, personalised wooden art, scenic photography and attractive ornaments.

Children from the Mark Jermain Stage School will perform Christmas carols from noon to 2pm this Saturday. The opportunity to donate to the Ty Hafan Children's Hospice Appeal that's inviting people to place a star in celebration of someone special on the Light up a Life tree in Coffee Culture is also being made available.

A giant 20-foot air dancing Santa Claus and Snowman have been arranged to attract attention.

Welsh RNLI crews return from Cockermouth floods

The RNLI’s Flood Rescue Teams, including 17 Swift Water Technicians from across North Wales was stood down from Cockermouth at 8pm yesterday, after rescuing hundreds of flood victims. The evacuation of Cockermouth had been completed, with residents of the town placed in the safety of temporary shelters.

The charity’s flood rescue team inshore lifeboats and highly trained volunteers proved their worth as, along with other emergency services, they rescued 300 people from the rapid influx of water on Thursday evening, using nine lifeboats especially transported to Cockermouth.

More than forty members of the RNLI Flood Rescue Team from across the county joined other emergency services in the mammoth flood rescue operation. The North Wales volunteers are from Conwy, Llandudno, Criccieth, Moelfre, Rhyl, Flint, Beaumaris, and Pwllheli RNLI lifeboats stations. They are volunteer RNLI crew with specialist training in swift water rescue.

Simon Bunting, an RNLI volunteer from Beaumaris who has been hard at work in Cockermouth says:

‘Driving boats up high streets is a bit out of the norm but we are all trained for swift water rescue. We are all volunteers but the training we receive from the charity prepares us for just this situation. It's been interesting to see the amount of water and the speed of water. We saw caravans floating down roads on our way here and the devastation to people's houses is unbelievable.

‘The D Class boat is a fantastic bit of kit. Nothing under 40 horse power could go out yesterday morning so we were a valuable asset working alongside other search and rescue organisations. And it's been great to see all the search and rescue organisations working together.’

The RNLI’s swift-water-rescue trained volunteer teams are made up of coastal lifeboat volunteers and staff from the lifesaving charity, which is generously funded by public donations and from organisations such as Goodyear, who kindly sponsors the RNLI’s Flood Rescue Team.

Bilingual car sharing scheme launches

The Deputy First Minister and Minister for the Economy and Transport, Ieuan Wyn Jones launched the new North Wales Car Share Scheme Northwalescarshare.com. or Taith.

The scheme is a major new web-based car-share service for the people of North Wales aimed at reducing the number of car journeys and protecting the environment. It will complete the Regional Transport Consortia’s branded schemes that are part of Liftshare Network.

This free-to-use, fully bilingual service will appeal to anyone who has to make a journey on north Wales roads, whether for commuting, the school run or the weekly shopping trip and wants to reduce the number of journeys they make by car. As well as reducing travel costs, the scheme has been designed to encourage more efficient use of the car, thereby reducing congestion and pollution across North Wales.

Northwalescarshare.com also links into the three other Welsh car-share schemes in SWWITCH TraCC and Sewta and offers people the chance to car share on longer journeys across Wales.

To register with the scheme simply log on to the website, Northwalescarshare.com, and register your details. Once your journey details have been entered the system then matches you with people making similar journeys and you can then decide who you would like to share with.

Councils' warning on council tax phone scam

Gwynedd and Anglesey Councils are warning Council tax payers to be vigilant against a phone scam which seems to be widespread throughout Wales.

It seems that council tax payers in both counties have been randomly contacted by a fraudster offering them help to claim a refund of overpaid council tax. Worryingly, however, they are asked for personal bank account details information during the call.

Gwynedd Council stresses that this is a despicable scam in an effort to get people to disclose their personal bank details. Should residents receive such a call they are firmly advised not to provide any personal details what so ever.

Anglesey Trading Standards' Martin Wyn Jones added, "Fraudsters are always inventing new ways to try to con people, and this seems to be the latest effort. Cold-callers can catch people off-guard, but our advice is to contact your local trading standards if unsure about any phone calls."

Environment enthusiasts from across Neath Port Talbot will put their efforts under the microscope at an awards ceremony tonight.

Neath Port Talbot Environment Forum will host their first ever ceremony to congratulate Schools, Businesses, Voluntary Organisations, Public Sector Departments and wildlife projects for their commitment to improving the Environment.

The awards which are split into six categories include Green School of the Year; Green Business of the Year; Voluntary Sector Organisation of the Year; Public Sector Department of the Year; Action for Wildlife Award and an Overall Winner. There will also be awards for commendation.

The ceremony organised by Neath Port Talbot Environment Forum and sponsored by The Countryside Council for Wales and CORUS will be hosted by Iolo Williams.

Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, Ali Thomas, for the NPT Environment Forum stated "The standard of awards entries has been fantastic and we hope that we can do this again next year. The council is committed to improving the environment and it is a pleasure to see people working together to make our County Borough a greener place to live.

First concert for the Vale from its new community choir

Over 50 singers who have joined the Vale of Glamorgan’s new community choir are busily rehearsing for their debut concert performance at St Donats Arts Centre on Sunday 6th December at 4pm.

The St Donats Atlantic Chorale will be performing their first concert that will include a selection of carols from around the world as well as a rare performance of Charpentier’s Midnight Mass, an enchanting piece of 18th century frippery based on popular Christmas tunes.

The ambitious choir, which has members hailing from all over the county, is led by one of the most imaginative choirmasters in south Wales, Carl Grainger, who is also Director of the Welsh Sinfonia Chorus.

Both the response to the new choir and the sales for its first concert have been very enthusiastic, “I am thrilled by the way people from the local community have come forward eager to make music and sing within Donats Arts Centre and Castle. They are both superb venues for choral music with magnificent spaces, perfect acoustics and an idyllic setting.”

The choir’s first performance follows last year’s magnificent concert of Handel’s Messiah which was conducted by Carl and performed by The Welsh Sinfonia and Chorus in St Donats Castle.

The new choir, which is still open to new members, attracted further support from the Vale of Glamorgan Assembly Member, Jane Hutt, when it began rehearsing in the summer, “the fantastic response from people across the Vale of Glamorgan to join up is superb.”

Environment agency praised for getting Amroth beach back in the swim

Detective work carried out by the Environment Agency which could result in Amroth winning back its blue flag has been praised by local AM Angela Burns.

Amroth failed to win the award for the past two years after excess rain water led to run off from nearby fields and a decrease in water quality.

The Environment Agency used new technology to track down the root of the problem and now says that the water quality – one of the main criteria for the Blue Flag award – now meets European standards.

“Losing the Blue Flag was a real blow to Amroth so this is excellent news and the Environment Agency should be praised for all its work in getting to the source of the problem,” said Mrs Burns.

“Amroth is one of my favourite beaches and it’s great news that the tourist operators in the area should hopefully be able to promote it as a Blue Flag beach again soon.

“The Flags aren’t awarded until the spring but I understand that the quality of bathing water is a vital criteria so Amroth now stands a much better chance of winning back its flag.”

TV's Lucy gets helping hand

TV presenter Lucy Owen turned to the Wales rugby squad for help after suffering an injury training for her Children in Need dancing debut on BBC Wales.

Lucy, who hosts the X Ray current affairs programme with her husband, Rhodri, pulled a muscle in her back during the final stages of preparations for the Strictly Come Dancing style competition.

With hours to go before her TV spot Lucy called on the Wales Team Physiotherapist Mark Davies to help her recover in time for the Friday night show.

Mark instantly agreed to treat her injury and eased her pain enough to face the cameras at the Millennium Centre in a competition against rival BBC Wales presenter teams in the charity special.

Lucy turned up at the Millennium Stadium and waited for the full Wales squad to finish their final run out before the Saturday international against Argentina.

When the team had left the changing room to return to their Vale Resort Hotel base Mark stayed on to assess Lucy’s problem and help with treatment and advice.

Lucy said:”Mark was absolutely great and I want to thank him and the Welsh Rugby Union for helping me in my hour of need.

“I was a bit taken aback when Mark warned me I might have to “dig in” and accept some pain when I danced but my injury was a lot easier after he located the trouble spot and treated the cause of the problem.

“I asked him if he was used to dealing with bigger injuries when he treated the players and I must say he did smile at that.

“I have always been a Wales rugby fan but I will cheer them on that extra bit louder in future for the way I was helped out.”

Some tickets from a starting price of £25 are still available for the match between Wales and Argentina which kicks off at the Millennium Stadium at 2.30pm on Saturday.

Newid slams ‘undemocratic’ referendum recommendations

Martin Wilding Davies, the leader of Newid, the party campaigning to establish a progressive political system based on a people’s assembly in Wales, has attacked the recommendations of the All Wales Convention as being ‘undemocratic’ and ‘unconstitutional’ in an article written for Open Democracy.

He points out that despite the research figures bandied about by Sir Emyr Jones Parry and others, “Wales has never shown more than a half-hearted commitment to devolution at the ballot box.”

“The turnout for the 1997 referendum that led to devolution was so low (50%) that barely one in four of the electorate actually voted in favour (75% either voted against or abstained). But since all of the main political parties had a manifesto commitment to devolution, and since marginally more votes were cast in favour (50.3%) than against (49.7%), it went ahead anyway.”

“This is what passes for ‘democracy’ in Wales”, he added.

“The only referendum options the Convention considered were ‘more of the same’ or ‘the same’ – not ‘less of the same’, ‘something completely different’ or ‘none of the above’ – they could just have recommended giving each voter their bus fare to the polling station, thereby saving a lot of trouble and ensuring a marginally better turnout.”

He emphasised a point being used by Labour MPs in what appears to be a concerted effort to slow the process, “The needs of the people of Wales seem to be entirely irrelevant to the interests of the political class.”

“Most Welsh ‘voters’ aren’t because they don’t. Only 43% were sufficiently enamoured with devolution to participate in the 2007 Assembly elections. A clear pattern has developed since only 38% voted in 2003 and 46% in 1999 when devolution was still new.”

“Do people not vote because they think the Assembly doesn’t have enough powers? The Convention doesn’t say. There’s no evidence to suggest that a referendum held in the next year or so would achieve more the 43% median turnout for all Assembly elections held to date.”

“And when the majority abstains from voting, it means there is something so seriously wrong with the political process that a referendum on more of the same would be considered unconstitutional in anything other than our electoral dictatorship. We should first consider what alternative political systems might appeal to the majority.”

“It might be popular to believe that all politicians lie, embezzle their expenses, break promises and pursue nothing but their own careers but the chief failure of the political class is in putting its own interests ahead of the people’s need for real democracy.”

“Even the All Wales Convention can smell the coffee. In its executive summary there is a prominent line that reads, ‘Democracy requires that information be provided, the arguments be presented, and the electorate given the opportunity to be better informed.’”

“If Wales is to be a democracy, if the nation is to govern itself rather than be governed by a remote political elite that has little sympathy for the Welsh condition and little interest in improving the quality of our lives, the people should be able to decide from all of the possible options, not just the one that suits the political class.”

Newid is campaigning for a deliberative People’s National Assembly based on a progressive form of democracy called ‘demarchy’ where decisions are made by ordinary people selected at random (sortition), like jury service, rather than by professional politicians chosen in elections. Such a system will remove the need for professional politicians and political parties, eradicate political expediency, eliminate the almost perpetual state of electioneering and greatly reduce the corrupting influence of vested interests.

People’s assembly members will be guided by an independent judiciary and civil service and will hear evidence presented by advocates. They will select a professional executive to deliver policy in specific fields of expertise rather than have their ministers appointed by political patronage.

“Newid can legitimately claim to be representing the interests of all the people of Wales because it can accommodate a wide spectrum of political opinion rather than that of a narrow interest group. Its constitution makes clear that the party will disband in favour of a people’s assembly as soon as that objective has been achieved.”

“Newid is in favour of a referendum on a written constitution that sets out the rights and responsibilities of all Welsh citizens. The key question to ask the electorate is this: which is more likely to give Wales a fresh start, the Assembly it already has with more powers or the world’s most progressive democracy?”

“Newid will give the people of Wales fresh hope. They’ll have the opportunity, at last, to build a sustainable economy with full employment, to establish a better education system, a more efficient health service, affordable housing and a more secure environment with a better standard of living and quality of life.”

“If our politicians have any integrity at all, they should support whatever system is in the best interests of the people of Wales, even if they have to make themselves redundant.”

“Peter Hain, Welsh Labour, Plaid Cymru, the crachach and rest of the political class will of course dismiss these proposals as utopian. They’ll no doubt issue dour warnings to the Welsh electorate to do what they say or suffer dire consequences. But then that’s the only defence they can offer, isn’t it?”

'For their sake' drive carefully call to parents in Swansea

Motorists are being targeted in a new safe driving campaign aimed at getting parents to drive more safely and set a good example to their children.

The 'For their sake' campaign includes posters which have gone up on the back of buses in Swansea and at bus shelters across the city highlighting bad habits committed by thousands of drivers every day.

Acts such as speeding, texting at the wheel and not wearing a seatbelt are still common factors with drivers even though they are all illegal.

Swansea Council's Road Safety Team is hoping to reinforce the safety messages to motorists by highlighting the fact that often children sat in vehicles are watching what their parents are doing and are likely to copy them later in life.

Jeff Green, County Road Safety Officer in Swansea Council said, "Children sat in the rear of vehicles can easily see what is going on when parents are at the wheel. If they can see that the parents are speeding, texting or not even wearing a seatbelt, they may think its ok.

"Hopefully the 'For their sake' campaign will strike a chord with parents and make them more aware that their children pay attention to what they do and that they need to set a good example behind the wheel."

Backing the campaign, South Wales Police Road Safety Manager Wayne Tucker said, "It is clear that some people are still ignoring the fact that not wearing a seatbelt, driving while using a mobile or speeding could kill you.

"We are committed to reducing deaths on our roads and would urge everyone to drive responsibly and it is vital that parents set a good example."

Fatal Collision in Bryn Road, Aberystwyth

At 16:35hrs yesterday (Thursday 19 November) a road traffic collision occurred in Bryn Road, Aberystwyth.

The circumstances are that the single vehicle involved left the steeply banked road and travelled some distance before colliding with the roof of a house( which is below the height of the road) and then became wedged against the building.

Fire Brigade and Ambulance staff attended and administered first aid to the elderly local gentleman who tragically, later died at hospital.

The house was unoccupied at the time and no other persons were injured in the incident.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, and anyone with any information should contact Aberystwyth police station on 101.

EU and Welsh Assembly Government funding continues to develop rural Wales

The Rural Affairs Minister visited the Tywi valley on 18 November to open one of the many Welsh projects that has benefitted from Rural Development Plan (RDP) funding.

The Minister opened the Tywi Afon yr Oesoedd Traditional Building centre which has been supported by over £500,000 of RDP funding. The centre will offer students and members of the public training in the fast disappearing skills of:

stonemasonry
and woodwork - skills which are needed to maintain the traditional buildings prevalent in this rural valley.

Speaking at the launch the Minister said:

"The Rural Development Plan is a very important mechanism for developing rural communities. Between 2007 and 2013 it will bring an impressive £795m of funding to rural Wales.

"Through this traditional building project we can see what can happen when communities realise that traditional skills have a place in the future, and are prepared to invest in that future. This centre will enable dying skills to be renewed and will ensure that the changes we make now will preserve our past and secure our future.

"I am also pleased to announce over £300,000 of RDP funding which has been awarded to the Community Enterprise Monmouthshire and the Marches project to develop collaboration opportunities between the social enterprise sectors in Monmouthshire and Wrexham. The project will focus on sharing best practice and transferring skills between the two regions.

"A further £8000 has been awarded to a sister project which will deliver an enterprise programme aimed at young people. The programme will include training and support to young people interested in starting their own social enterprises."

More businesses receive a LIFt

Three businesses in the Caerphilly county borough have been given a cash boost thanks to the support on offer through a new grant fund.

The Local Investment Fund (LIF) is a new scheme that has been made available to 15 local authorities across the West Wales and the Valleys or Convergence region, including 6 local authorities in South East Wales. They have been awarded EU Funding through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), delivered through the Welsh Assembly Government, to provide grant funding to assist businesses within their areas.

The three latest firms to benefit from the grant are Fabcraft Ltd in Llanbradach, Hobbs Valve Ltd in Caerphilly and Caer Health Services who are also based in Caerphilly.

Fabcraft Ltd is a fabrication and engineering business operating on Graddfa Industrial Estate in Lanbradach. Established in 1973, the firm currently employs 20 people and was awarded the grant to purchase a special tube bending machine which greatly improves the efficiency and accuracy of the process.

Hobbs Valve Limited is based in a unit on Trecenydd Business Park in Caerphilly. The company, which manufactures specialist valves, was established in 2005 and now employs 21 people. The grant helped purchase an exhibition stand and marketing materials to help raise the profile of the business.

Caer Health Services provides occupational health services to other businesses, government agencies and public authorities and employs 15 people. They were awarded a LIF grant towards the cost of re-branding the business, producing marketing brochures and up-grading their website.

Businesses or business start-ups that are investing in any of the following to expand or start their business may be eligible to apply for a Local Investment Fund Grant:

Gwent Police awards ceremony

After more than 50 years service and not a day off sick a former Gwent Police officer and current member of staff still has no plans for retirement.

70 year old Nigel Pocknell, the force Welfare Officer, is just one of a number of staff and officers who are up for awards at a ceremony on Thursday 19th November.

Nigel has been nominated for the Employee of the Year award. Following his retirement after a 32 year career as a Gwent police officer Nigel Pocknell took up the newly created role of welfare officer for the force in 1992.

Nigel supports police officers, staff and retired colleagues, often in the most difficult of circumstances at all hours of the day. He provides assistance to those who have dealt with distressing incidents, are terminally ill or have lost loved ones. It can be a particularly demanding role which he performs with ease and without complaint. In 2001 Nigel was awarded an MBE for his welfare services work in support of retired police officers.

Below is just one comment from those who have worked with him;

“Nigel can be the avuncular listener, the skilled counsellor, the paternal advice giver and the shoulder to cry on. He shrinks neither from listening to the distressed person nor from giving firm advice to those who have lost their way.”

The forces Neighbourhood Officer for Alway PC 1202 Elaine Newbury is also in the running for the award.

Elaine has worked in the Alway area for her entire 10 year career and has a vast knowledge of local criminals and their tactics. Officers regularly turn to her for advice and guidance. Younger officers have also been allocated monthly postings to work alongside her, after which they return to their teams with enhanced skills in respect of interviews and prisoner handling.

PC Newbury detected 132 offences in 2008/9 and 199 offences in 2007/08, the highest individual rate in the force for both years. Her work has led to a number of prolific offenders being imprisoned.

Other awards that will feature on the night are;

Offender Management Unit Blaeanu Gwent & Caerphilly;
The Offender Management Unit was set up to co-ordinate and deal with all Prolific and Priority Offenders (POPOS) and the management and execution of all Forensic Identification packages within Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly.

The impact upon the community has been extremely positive with prolific offenders being arrested for offences at an early stage, minimising their ability to commit further crime. The OMU has also developed innovative approaches to dealing with offenders through an accommodation project which provides them with some stability and responsibility through running their own home. The Probation Service has applauded this scheme and further work is ongoing to extend the project. The team has significantly reduced turn around times for forensic identifications and this has had a positive impact on performance in terms of crime detections. As a result of the success of the team in the Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly the model has now been rolled out across the whole of the force.

General Purpose Vehicle;
A group of officers have been nominated for their work and commitment to proactive policing with the Newport area. As a team, working on the General Purpose Vehicle (GPV), they take an extremely positive approach to any task asked of them and their seniors regularly receive praise for their performance.

In just over 8 months the General Purpose Vehicle made 438 arrests, submitted 417 stop and search forms and seized 91 vehicles that were either being driven dangerously or involved in crime.
In addition to their statistical results they provide a regular uniformed high visibility presence in local communities.

CHIEF CONSTABLES COMMENDATIONS:
These are awarded to members of staff in recognition of praiseworthy and notable acts over and above what is normally expected of them;

During the second half of 2007, there was an increase in dwelling house burglaries in Newport. With no particular modus operandi or significant lines of enquiry officers worked tirelessly, seeking out investigative opportunities and collating all possible evidence.

Four prolific offenders were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit dwelling house burglaries. In August 2008 they all pleaded guilty which reflected the hard work undertaken. In total 186 dwelling house burglaries were detected and the arrests dramatically reduced the number of such burglaries that were blighting our community. At the conclusion of the trial the judge congratulated the officers for the professional manner in which the evidence was presented and for their attention to detail. This team are being recognised for their work with a Chief Constables Commendation.

Commendations are being awarded to two officers for their actions in dealing with a man who was firing an air rile in Graig y Rhacca, Caerphilly in February this year. Acting to ensure the safety of the community they surrounded the man and when he ran off chased him, disregarding their own safety. The offender was caught before anyone was seriously hurt, he later pleaded guilty and received a custodial sentence of 18 months.

Two officers are being recognised for their roles in a kidnap and rape investigation in the Newport area in October 2007. They worked tirelessly, both on and off duty, in ensuring a thorough investigation was conducted and support was given to the victim which gave them the courage to give evidence. Working over an extended period of time, the officers continued to demonstrate commitment and enthusiasm. At the conclusion of the case the offender was convicted or rape, kidnap and theft and received a total sentence of nine years in custody.

Paul O'Borne is Planning Manager for Mental Health Services for Caerphilly County Borough Council. He has chaired several groups in Gwent set up to address the needs of people with mental health problems who come into contact with the criminal justice system, as witnesses, victims or offenders. He is receiving a commendation for his efforts in ensuring that Places of Safety are provided for those people detained by the police under the Mental Health Act. Mr OBorne has been a determined activist in progressing the issue for Gwent. His knowledge, energy, tact and determination were key in these provisions becoming a reality.

PC Mike Gunter is receiving a commendation for his sustained commitment and proactive approach to policing within the Newport area whilst working on the General Purpose Vehicle (GPV). With exceptional local knowledge he has achieved an extremely high arrest and process rate and colleagues regularly request his assistance to identify offenders and witnesses. PC Gunter has arrested nearly three hundred people in just over 2 ½ years. These include offences from robbery to possession of controlled drugs. In addition to this he has seized 175 vehicles under the road traffic act, demonstrating his sustained achievement and commitment to policing.

Big screen continues big game success

Swansea city centre's super big screen is ready to kick-off another weekend of sport.

Wales face Rugby World Cup semi-finalists Argentina at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday November 21 at 2.30pm and those without tickets can watch it in Swansea.

The eagerly anticipated third game in the Welsh team's 2009 Autumn International series will be broadcast on Castle Square's BBC Big Screen.

Nigel Jones, Strategic Events Manager for Swansea Council, said: "Castle Square is proving to be very popular with residents as more and more footage is being shown on the BBC Big Screen.

Ospreys out to end recent slump

The Ospreys are hoping to arrest their recent decline in the WRU Age Grade Championships when the Under 16s and under 18s play host to Gogledd Cymru on Sunday.

Providing the recent inclement weather abates, the Under 16s will meet at Corus RFC whilst the Under 18s come face to face at Llandarcy.

A decision on the two games will be made later today in a bid to prevent the two North Wales sides making a fruitless journey south.

The Ospreys under 16s have fallen off quite alarmingly after a decent start to the season – early victories over Blues South and the Dragons, have given way to three straight defeats.

However, with home advantage in their favour, the region will be confident of inflicting a fourth defeat of the season on a Gogledd Cymru side that has shown marked improvement since the beginning of the campaign.

Anything less for the Ospreys and their hopes of reaching the final of this season’s competition will once and for all disappear.

The side is currently lying in third place with 12 points from five games. They are nine points behind second placed Blues South and 11 adrift of the table-topping Scarlets.

The Ospreys U18s are also in desperate need of a victory having slipped unceremoniously into fourth place, a point shy of the Dragons, eight points behind the Blues and 13 behind the Scarlets with two games remaining.

Like the U16s, they too have lost their last three games, against the Blues, Scarlets and Dragons and a fifth defeat of the season on Sunday, will put paid to their slim hopes of reaching the final.

Pobol y Cwm shortlisted for award

Soap opera Pobol y Cwm, produced by BBC Cymru Wales and broadcast on S4C, has been shortlisted at this year’s Mental Health Media Awards. It is up against EastEnders, Doctors, and Hollyoaks in the Soap and Continual TV Drama category.

The nomination is for a storyline in which single mother Nesta, played by Catrin Mara, suffered from post-natal depression.

The Mental Health Media Awards celebrate the best portrayal of mental distress and reporting of mental health in broadcast media and cover a wide range of programmes, including radio and television documentary and drama, young people's media, news and soaps.

According to Series Producer Ynyr Williams:

“It is especially important for us to depict real life and responsibly reflect the true nature of mental health.

“This nomination is a great recognition for Pobol y Cwm and we are very happy to be in such esteemed company.”

North Wales RNLI volunteers help rescue over 200 people in Cumbria floods

Volunteers from every part of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, including 17 Swift Water Technicians from North Wales have been involved in a massive search and rescue operation. The team have been working through the night in ‘horrendous conditions’ after record-breaking rainfall swamped parts of northern England.

More than forty members of the RNLI Flood Rescue Team from across the county have joined other emergency services in the mammoth flood rescue operation. The North Wales volunteers are from Conwy, Llandudno, Criccieth, Moelfre, Rhyl, Flint, Beaumaris, and Pwllheli RNLI lifeboats stations. They are all trained in swift water rescue.

More volunteer crew members are on their way to the scene, as teams from the charity rescued dozens of people from flooded homes in Cockermouth, where flood water was surging through the streets at speeds of up to 25 knots. The teams said that the flood water was so high in places they were rescuing people from first floor windows, including some very young children and elderly people, and taking them to safety.

The Environment Agency said the situation was "very serious". Police said water levels in Cockermouth centre had reached more than 2.5m (8ft 2in). Overseeing the RNLI teams from the police command centre in Penrith, RNLI Divisional Inspector North Andy Clift says:

‘RNLI Flood Rescue Teams arrived on scene around 10pm last night. They have worked through the night in horrendous conditions, evacuating people from their homes in Cockermouth. We also sent an RNLI crew to Keswick to assist power company staff attempting to reach an electricity sub-station.

‘Our swift-water-rescue trained volunteer teams, made up of coastal lifeboat volunteers and staff from the charity, train year-round to ensure we can respond to the specific conditions faced with swift water flooding, which are different to the conditions our volunteers usually face at sea. We will assist the emergency response for as long as we are needed.’

RNLI inshore lifeboats are capable of operating in the current conditions as they have engines strong enough to cope with the speed of the water. Other craft had to be grounded due to the severe conditions. Meanwhile the volunteer crew of the RNLI all-weather lifeboat, based at Workington, was also involved in a sea search for a policeman missing after severe flooding caused a bridge to collapse in the town.

The lifeboat charity’s Flood Rescue Team, which is supported by Goodyear, is operating in Cockermouth and Keswick, rescuing people from flooded properties and assisting power workers reach electricity sub-stations.

Deputy Minister congratulates Social Enterprise Awards winners

Deputy Minister for Regeneration, Leighton Andrews has presented prizes to the three winners of the inaugural Social Enterprise Awards Wales which were held at the Wales Millennium Centre to mark Social Enterprise Day.

The Centre for Alternative Technology, Machynlleth was victorious in the Best Social Enterprise (turnover of £1 million plus) while Cardiff based firms Pack-It Promotions, and Cycle Training Wales were named Best Social Enterprise (turnover of less than £1 million) and Best New Social Enterprise (operating for less than three years) respectively.

The Welsh winners will now represent the nation at the UK Social Enterprise Awards which will be held on December 3rd and decided by an online public vote.

The Deputy Minister said:

"I congratulate all three companies on their achievements today and those throughout the year that have led to their awards. They have beaten off very stiff competition, not least from the other finalists, and it is testament to the calibre of the Social Enterprise sector in Wales that we had such strong competition in all three categories. We have a long and successful history of social businesses in Wales and it gives me great pleasure to see that we also have a bright and promising future.

MP welcomes Gorsedd Bran refusal

Conservative Member of Parliament for Clwyd West, David Jones, has welcomed the news that the Planning Inspectorate has rejected the appeal against the refusal by Denbighshire County Council to grant planning permission for a new wind farm at Gorsedd Bran, near Nantglyn.

David Jones said:

“The cumulative impact of wind farms in the Denbighshire uplands is having a very detrimental effect upon the residents of those areas; there are, quite simply, far too many turbines in the hills.

“Denbighshire is to be commended for its refusal of this application and I am delighted that the Planning Inspectorate upheld the council’s decision.”

Tito & Millard look ahead to Australia clash

Speaking after the Cardiff Blues Boomerang Challenge at the Vale of Glamorgan training centre Tito said:

"I've obviously played a few of the Australian players in Super 14 but there are a lot of young ones coming through."

"They have a young and enthusiastic team that did a good job on Gloucester a few weeks ago."

"These guys have got a good opportunity to push for places, guys like Quade Cooper who got a place in the test team."

"These players have got a point to prove so they'll be really pushing for higher honours when it comes to the test matches."

"I think it's a touring party so they've got some young guys, who they're trying to blood in for the World Cup."

"However, I think there a good team and I think we'll see some young and exciting players roll out against the Blues next Tuesday."

Although building for the 20011 World Cup Tito feels that the Australians will be competing for places in the Test team and knows that the youngsters will psoe a real threat.

"They've had a pretty up and down start on this tour but they had a good win against England and I'm sure they'll be looking to kick on with the mid-weekers and the Tests coming up."

"They're quite a skillful outfit with really good skills in their backs."

"They like to give it a bit of air and chuck it about and I'm sure it'll be a good match and if the weather comes good and the crowd comes it should be a fantastic night."

Monmouthshire commended at True Taste Food & Drink Awards

Monmouthshire’s food and tourism industry has been honoured at the ‘Wales The True Taste’ Food & Drink Awards for its role in making the county a top food tourism destination.

Monmouthshire achieved a bronze award, having been narrowly beaten to the highest honour of Wales’ official ‘Food Tourism Destination’ by Pembrokeshire, with Blaenafon Cheddar Company achieving silver.

Judges were keen to praise the commitment to quality shown by the local food and hospitality industry in Monmouthshire, as well as the depth to which an enthusiasm for local food has become part of the county’s psyche and an intrinsic element of its tourism offer.

The awards were announced at a gala ceremony held on Thursday night at Abergavenny’s Market Hall, attended by 450 guests drawn from all corners of Wales, including Elin Jones, the Minister for Rural Affairs, and a wide range of representatives from the food and tourism industries.

The application for the award was made jointly by Monmouthshire County Council’s Tourism section and adventa, the Rural Development Programme for Monmouthshire, and follows a year of marketing promotions undertaken to highlight the county’s win last year, the first occasion on which the ‘Food Tourism Destination’ category was included in the awards.

Nicola Smith, Principal Tourism Officer for Monmouthshire County Council, said:

“Although Monmouthshire County Council, together with adventa, submitted the application, this recognition couldn’t have been achieved without the hard work and creativity shown by our numerous local food and drink producers and chefs, and events such as the Abergavenny Food Festival, which bring the use of local food and drink to the forefront of the county’s visitor experience.

‘Wales The True Taste’ is a Welsh Assembly Government initiative which recognises the achievements of artisan producers and hospitality businesses in furthering the interests of the Welsh food industry and promoting the economic benefits of using local food and drink to residents and visitors.

The decision to host the 2009 awards in Monmouthshire was made in response to the county’s status as the first official food tourism destination in Wales, with the historic Market Hall in Abergavenny being chosen as the venue in a bid to get back to the very roots of food production.

AM backs efforts to provide land for steel-makers expansion

The go-ahead has been given for more talks to seal a deal to sell land to steel-makers Celsa for a future major expansion of its Cardiff operations, Plaid Cymru AM Chris Franks has learnt.

Deputy First Minister for the Economy and Transport Ieuan Wyn Jones has agreed that the Welsh Assembly Government officials can continue to negotiate to sell 51 acres land at Pengam Green to the Spanish-owned business.

Chris Franks, Plaid Cymru AM for South Wales Central, who area includes Cardiff, said: “I’m pleased that negotiations will continue to conclude a deal with Celsa. They have become a hugely important employer in Cardiff since the collapse of ASW and it is vital that they are able to expand in the future, hopefully, creating a lot more manufacturing jobs for the people of Cardiff and South Wales.”

In September 2007 Ieuan Wyn Jones agreed that the Welsh Assembly Government should negotiate to sell land at Pengam Green in view of Celsa’s £150m investment and the creation of 800 jobs. Celsa want to protect the potential for future expansion of steel making operations from its existing constrained site. The Deputy First Minister has now agreed to a further period of negotiation to conclude an agreement.

The remaining landholdings of the Welsh Assembly Government in the area of around eight acres are required for a future strategic transport proposal led by Cardiff Council.

Appropriate clauses will be introduced in the disposal documents to ensure that the Welsh Assembly Government has a first option to buy the land back at market value in the event of Celsa going into liquidation, wishing to sell to a third party or declaring the land surplus to their requirements.

British & Irish Cup up and running

The message was loud and clear from the six Welsh teams from the Principality about their involvement in the new British & Irish Cup - it matters, it is a step up and we will be taking it very seriously.

The knockers of the fledgling competition have tried to paint it as a hindrance rather than a help for the game in Wales, but to a man the coaches and captains from Pontypridd, Neath, Cardiff, Aberavon, Newport and Llanelli said they can’t wait to test themselves on the newest stage in UK & Irish rugby.

The tournament kicks-off tonight with two classic Welsh derbies - Aberavon to Parc y Scarlets to face Llanelli while Pontypridd travel down the A48 to face Cardiff at the Arms Park.

Neath, meanwhile, host former Guinness Premiership outfit Bristol at The Gnoll and Newport entertain the current leaders of the English Championship, Exeter Chiefs, at Rodney Parade.

“Exeter will be coming on the back of a run of 11 successive wins in the English Championship. We know it is going to be tough for us to play against full-time professionals, but the players can’t wait to get stuck into them,” said Newport coach Sven Cronk.

“We will definitely be going after them in the game and we want to see just where we stand against the top teams at our level in England.”

That is a familiar goal for all the Welsh sides, who have been locked in local battles since the professional game went Regional some six years ago. The introduction of cross-border competition – Munster, Leinster and Ulster are putting in their A teams and there are two Scottish club sides and their National Academy taking part – will finally give the top six Principality Premiership teams contact with their counterparts across the Severn bridge and over the Irish Sea.

Collision in Amlwch

Two people have been taken to hospital following a road traffic collision in Amlwch this morning.

Shortly after 10:30am North Wales Police received a report of a single-vehicle collision on Lon Goch.

An ambulance was called and an elderly woman has been taken to hospital with what is believed to be minor injuries and an elderly man was airlifted by the Air Ambulance.

Both were taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

The man who was airlifted to hospital following the single-vehicle collision remains in hospital but his condition has improved. His injuries are now being described as minor.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have been travelling along that particular stretch of road and who witnessed the collision, to contact officers at the Western Roads Policing Unit on 101, or 0845 607 1001 (Welsh line) or 0845 607 1002 (English line).

The road remains closed at this time but it is expected to re-open within the next hour.

Exercise USAR Cymru 2009 in Neath Port Talbot

Emergency services and key partners will be practising their response to a major incident tomorrow (Saturday 21 November).

All agencies are required to regularly exercise their emergency plans to ensure an efficient response to major emergencies.

A fictitious incident will occur and emergency services personnel and local authority colleagues will respond and enact their major emergency plans to deal with the incident.

Approximately 60 simulated casualties will be in place to test the response of all the agencies, which include the Welsh Fire Service Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Team, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, South Wales Police, Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust, Neath Port Talbot Local Authority, 160 Brigade (Wales), 203 (Welsh) Field Hospital (V), St John Ambulance Cymru and the British Red Cross Society.

Eric Bellew, Welsh Urban Search and Rescue Team Manager, said: "This is the largest exercise of its kind to be run in South Wales this year and it will provide all partners with an opportunity to practice our combined response to a large scale emergency.

"We all hope these types of incident will never occur, but we must be prepared to respond in the event of one happening. The public need to be assured that their local emergency services and other key partners have robust plans in place and that these are practiced on a regular basis."

The exercise will take place in the Jersey Marine area off the public highway, and The Quays at Briton Ferry will be used during the exercise as a Survivor Reception Centre., but the public should be assured that any perceived increase in sightings of emergency service vehicles is in relation to this exercise.

Imitation flashing dummies warning

Cardiff Council Trading Standards Officers are warning of imitation dummies that could potentially kill babies or small children.

The dummies look very similar to normal dummies but are fitted with flashing lights and sold as costume jewellery. They do not conform to the relevant safety standards for dummies, pacifiers or soothers.

A number of these dummies have been seized recently by Trading Standards and Licensing Officers whilst being sold on the streets of Cardiff.

The dummies come apart easily and contain a small electronic circuit board inside which is sharp enough to cut children and small enough to the swallowed.

The dummies also contain three small batteries that could also be easily swallowed and they have long cords attached for putting around adults` necks which could strangle a child.

Trading standards officers fear that the dummies could be given to children instead of the real thing as they are more appealing, due to the flashing lights. Should the dummy come apart children could very quickly put the electronics and/or the batteries into their mouths which could form a choking hazard.

Councillor Judith Woodman, Executive Member for Communities said: "These imitation dummies would be very dangerous in the hands of babies and young children. They come apart very easily and could be life threatening. Our advice to parents is not to buy these imitation dummies or to throw them away before a child is seriously injured or killed.."

Trading standards officers are keen to hear from anyone who has seen the dummies being sold and to contact them on 029 2087 2059.

Swine flu vaccine to be offered to children

Children aged over six months and under five years will be offered the swine flu vaccine.

A total of 168,000 children fall into this category in Wales.

Vaccination of people in clinical risk groups under the first phase of the vaccination programme is well under way. Vaccinating these groups remains a priority to protect those at greatest risk from swine flu.

The UK health departments are working with the British Medical Association and NHS organisations to agree the details of how young children will be offered the vaccine once general practitioners (GPs) complete the vaccination of priority groups.

It's expected that children will be offered the vaccine from December. Parents of children who are over six months and under five years should wait to be contacted by their local surgery.

The Chief Medical Officer for Wales, Dr Tony Jewell, said:

"The four UK Health Ministers have agreed that the second phase of the swine flu vaccination programme should focus on all children aged six months and over and under five years.

"Evidence shows that young children are suffering the greatest overall impact from the disease. They are particularly vulnerable to complications and more likely to become seriously ill and need hospital treatment than other groups. Young children are effective spreaders of the disease and the clinical attack rate is also higher, meaning a greater proportion of children will become ill. Vaccination will mean that fewer children in this age group will become seriously ill and need hospital treatment.

"Vaccination is the simplest, safest and most effective way of protecting people’s health and will help in our efforts to minimise its impact on individuals and communities.

"We expect vaccination to be through GPs, and are exploring with the General Practitioners Committee how best to do this. The programme will begin very shortly once phase one of the vaccination programme targeting the original priority groups is coming to an end. Parents will be contacted by their GP surgery inviting them to have their eligible children vaccinated.

"The approach has been agreed by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) and Scientific Advisory Group on Emergencies (SAGE).

"In addition, advice from the JCVI has suggested that main carers for elderly or disabled people should be an important next group. We will discuss this advice with carers’ organisations, including a number of practical questions, including how to identify and verify the carers involved.

"While the vast majority of people, who contract swine flu, get over it within five to seven days, with rest, plenty of fluids and paracetamol, some people experience severe complications and even die.

"Sadly, this week, we have seen a further increase in swine flu-related deaths. However, we are aware that a number of these people had been seriously ill for some time. This is a tragedy for the families and friends of the individuals but unfortunately, we have been expecting to see an increase in the number of deaths. This is the same for seasonal flu in the winter.

"Whilst reported cases of swine flu have recently started declining, it is too early to draw any conclusions about the number of future cases."

Monmouthshire projects that bring together older people with young people can now enter for the Intergenerational Awards 2010.

Angelina Patrick, Monmouthshire County Council’s Community Focused Schools Development Officer, said:

“We will present awards to organisations and groups who bring the generations together to help build relationships and understanding between young and older members of the community’’.

“If you have been involved in a project or activity in 2009 and you feel that it has helped unite the generations, you will be able to apply to win an Intergenerational award. “

Monmouthshire’s ‘Community Focused Schools’ in partnership with the Older People’s Strategic Partnership Group will be hosting the Intergenerational Awards scheme.

Council warns against Hoax Calls

Pembrokeshire County Council is warning householders to be on their guard against a spate of hoax phone calls purporting to be from the Authority.

The Council has been contacted by residents who have received calls claiming to be from an organisation that has reviewed their Council Tax account.

The caller says the resident is entitled to a refund because they have overpaid. It is then claimed that to enable the refund to be made, the caller requires details of the householder's personal bank account.

Council spokesman, Len Mullins, warned the calls were bogus and were in no way connected to the Authority.

"Under no circumstances should residents provide bank details over the telephone to anyone unless they are certain the call is genuine" he explained.

"In cases where a customer has overpaid Council Tax, we will issue a revised bill to advise them of the value of that overpayment."

He added that police had been informed of the hoax calls.

Obituary: Morlais Thomas

Welsh rugby is mourning the loss of one of its true characters. Alderman 'Morlais' Thomas, a Life Patron of Gowerton RFC, sadly passed away last Sunday at the age of 90.

Mr Thomas was a lifelong rugby fan. He was president of Llwchwr schools rugby and was always interested in promoting schoolboy rugby and was also heavily involved with Penyrheol Boxing Club.

Mr Thomas played was chairman and also a mayor of Gorseinon Council, on which he served for 16 years. He was devoted to his town and fully committed to the community.

He was a regular contributor from the floor at WRU annual general meetings where his good humoured speeches would always leave a mark.

Dennis Gethin, president of the WRU, said: “Morlais was one of the true characters of Welsh rugby. He was a champion of the grassroots game and the WRU Annual General Meeting will never be the same without his presence.

“He kept us all on our toes over the years and his heart was in the right place for the betterment of the game. He will certainly be missed.

“Morlais was hoping to be at the unveiling of Sir Tasker Watkins’ statue last Sunday. The two were good friends and enjoyed a great repartee at the AGMs over the years. It was ironic therefore that I received the news of his death shortly after the unveiling ceremony.”

RNLI charity’s Flood Rescue Teams on scene at inland floods

Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s Flood Rescue Teams (FRT) are due to arrive on scene at Cockermouth at around 10.30pm from the north west coast and Wales to assist in the rescue efforts currently underway in the town.

The charity’s inshore lifeboats are capable of operating in the current conditions as they have engines strong enough to cope with the speed of the water; earlier other craft had to be grounded until conditions improve.

Overseeing the RNLI teams from the police command centre in Penrith, RNLI Divisional Inspector North Andy Clift says:

‘Our swift-water-rescue trained volunteer teams, made up of coastal lifeboat volunteers and staff from the charity, were alerted at around 5pm to join the emergency flood response to people in Cockermouth. We’ve gathered our response equipment including inshore inflatable boats, and headed straight for Penrith for briefing. The operational teams are now travelling direct to Cockermouth to prepare four lifeboats to launch into the floodwaters. We’ve got a further five lifeboats on route.

‘The dark and cold conditions won’t help, but our teams train year-round to ensure we can respond to the specific conditions faced with swift water flooding, which are different to the conditions our volunteers usually face at sea.

‘We expect to operate throughout the night, and will assist the emergency response for as long as we are needed.’

Thomas leads Neath into unknown

Neath kick off their campaign in the new British & Irish Cup with an attractive home game on Friday evening against old adversaries Bristol who currently lie second in the English Championship. (KO 7.30pm).

Neath have not seen action since their 28-26 win over Llanelli at Parc y Scarlets on October 31st so are eager to get back into action.

A Neath spokesman said, “We are delighted to be taking our place in this exciting new competition. For many years, Welsh rugby fans have complained about the lack of cross-border Anglo-Welsh challenges. Now is the time for them to vote with their feet and back this new competition. We are maintaining our policy of allowing Under-12’s in free and it should be a good family occasion.”

Former Wales outside-half Arwel Thomas captains the Welsh All Blacks who make one change from the side originally named for last week’s game at Pontypridd which was postponed due to the waterlogged pitch at Sardis Road with Wayne Mitchell replacing the injured Nathan Brew and Alec Jenkins coming onto the replacements’ bench.

Neath Head Coach Patrick Horgan, said: “We have a very tough challenge ahead of us in Bristol. But it is a challenge we relish – the opportunity to take on a fully-professional, all-star English club at The Gnoll is not to be missed and I hope that our supporters are up for the challenge too.

“There can be no under-estimating just how big an opportunity this competition will be for Neath and all the other Welsh clubs. But it is a tournament that we have lobbied hard for as it will test our players in a new environment against different players and different styles of play.

“Bristol are a very accomplished outfit indeed and are looking to bounce back into the Premiership after their relegation last year. They have some well-known names like Jason Spice, Ross Johnston, Darren Crompton and Nathan Budgett who have played in Wales and who will be familiar with our style.

“They will be missing lock Mariano Sambucetti who is playing for Argentina against Wales but they have a big, mobile pack and some top runners behind although we gather they may have suffered a couple of injuries against Nottingham last Sunday so maybe there is something to exploit there.

“We’ll need to be at our best but I am confident we can rise to the challenge especially if the supporters get behind us like they can at The Gnoll.

“Unfortunately, our prop Anthony Lott who has been a revelation this season is injured and will miss the game so there is a timely return to fitness for Nicky Downs. Luke Ford, Nathan Brew David Evans and John Bowd are also out of contention but we had a good session at The Gnoll which was perfect on Wednesday and we are really looking forward to what will be a big game in every sense.”

Cwrw wins gold award at True Taste of Wales awards

Award winning Brewer Evan-Evans was voted the top Welsh drink at the True Taste of Wales Awards at Abergavenny last night (Nov 19).

The award is the second major prize for the company’s brands in the last 12 months.

The company was voted the third best brewer in the UK in the Best Bitter Category at the Great British Beer Festival, the UK’s leading consumer Beer Festival.

Chief executive Simon Buckley said: “This year my family celebrate 240 years of family brewing in Wales.
“We have had a record year for winning awards.

“Cwrw has been voted the best beer in Wales for draught beer, and now for the bottled version.
“I am extremely proud to win this award in this very special year for us as a family.

Cardiff's old library hosts fascinating new exhibitions

The current Anne Frank Exhibition being held at the Old Library has proven to be very popular and Cardiff Council is pleased to announce it is going to be supplemented by two more interesting historical showcases on the ground floor gallery.

These will consist of the Polish Consulate's 70th Anniversary Exhibition of the outbreak of World War II - “From War to Victory 1939 – 1989, Polish Way to Independence” - as well as the 20th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the 20th Anniversary of the first free elections in Poland after World War II.

The exhibitions will reflect about the meaning of the half century between the outbreak of World War II and the collapse of communism, linking the two dates and considering their meaning as cornerstones of the tragic history of the twentieth century.

Both Nazism and communism changed Poland to an almost irreversible degree, affecting its social, political and cultural life. Poland was the first European nation to oppose, in 1939, the spread of Nazism and communism, and was the first to remove their communist government from power in 1989.

The "From War to Victory 1939 – 1989, Polish Way to Independence" exhibition, running until November 27 is being held by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Manchester.

Vice-Consul Szymon Bialek said: "Our aim is to acquaint all the people with the fact that World War II started by the Germany’s invasion of Poland and the fall of the communist system in Europe also started in Poland. Without the events which took place in Poland in 1988 and 1989 - the Solidarity movement and free elections on 6 June 1989 - the Berlin Wall would not have fallen."

Meanwhile the new powerful and captivating exhibition, ‘Anne Frank + You’, will continue at the Old Library, The Hayes until November 29.

Cardiff Council and the Anne Frank Trust UK are jointly hosting this hugely successful multimedia exhibition which will powerfully bring the messages and voice of Anne Frank firmly into the 21st Century.

The exhibition is set to be visited by many school groups who will gain an insight into that period of history.

Executive member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Freda Salway, said: "The Anne Frank + You exhibition is going to be a poignant and fascinating experience for our young students. Anne Frank is a symbol of all those who lost their lives during the Holocaust, and her diary is just as relevant now as it was when she wrote it."

An age old rivalry of Welsh rugby will be reincarnated in a new format as Pontypridd take on the Blue & Blacks of Cardiff in the inaugural pool match of the British & Irish Cup this evening. (KO 7.15pm)

The match will be played at the Arms Park - with Ponty having to borrow their opponents’ home ground. The new cup tournament offers a way forward for the semi professional club game in Wales, but can thrive on some of the old tribal rivalries in doing so.

Despite the disruption of bad weather and postponed games, along with the switch of venues, the Ponty squad have trained well this week and according to reports from within the camp, are champing at the bit for some competitive action.

Centre Gavin Dacey failed a late fitness test on his damaged shoulder, and joins flanker Kristian Dacey (shoulder), wing Owen Williams (jaw) and scrum half Gavin Morris (knee) on the sick list. Unavailable through regional commitments are props Sam Hobbs (Blues) and Pat Palmer (Dragons).

Plaid AM welcomes Minister’s support to retain disabled benefits

Plaid AM Leanne Wood has welcomed support from Deputy Social Services Minister Gwenda Thomas for the retention of Attendance Allowances as a benefit for disabled pensioners.

The South Wales Central AM has been campaigning on the issue because of fears that the UK Government could axe the Attendance Allowance following a Westminster Green Paper published last July and proposals in yesterday’s Queen’s Speech.

Leanne Wood, speaking during a debate on Paying for Care in Wales, told Gwenda Thomas: “You are well aware of the arguments against the abolition of disability benefits such as attendance allowance. Such a move would have a disproportionate impact on Wales and on the Welsh economy as well as on disabled pensioners, because the number of claimants is much higher here. I would be grateful if you could reiterate in the strongest possible terms your opposition to the abolition of attendance allowance.

“I was comforted to hear that you were committed to an effective dialogue with your ministerial counterparts in the UK Government to help you to achieve a shared view on the way forward. I know what your position is on attendance allowance, and I am confident that you will express the opinion of Welsh stakeholders to your counterparts in Westminster.”

Leanne Wood also welcomed plans to improve social services in Wales.

“I hope that that will mean that local authorities will recognise how important those services are to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.”

Leanne Wood said that she was disappointed that taxation was not favoured as a way of paying for care.

“Can you confirm that, while taxation may be ruled out by the UK Government, you will not rule it out, and that, if a majority of people as part of the consultation favour that option and feel that it is the best way forward, you will argue for it among your counterparts in Westminster? People find it very difficult to understand why social care can be paid for out of progressive taxation in Scotland, but that we cannot afford it here.

Responding Gwenda Thomas said: “Personally, I believe that attendance allowance will still have a role to play in supporting people to live independently. I do not understand clearly enough what the UK Government is saying about people in receipt of attendance allowance retaining the same level of care. That is an issue on which we need clarity and which needs to be a part of this consultation process.”

The Minister pledged that the views of the people of Wales on paying for social care would be conveyed to the UK Government.

Man dies following house fire, Undy

Following a house fire in Rectory Gardens, Undy on Wednesday 18th November the 41 year old male taken to Morriston hospital with injuries has now died.

Police are not treating the fire as suspicious and are acting on behalf of the coroner.

Phillips becomes ambassador for charity

Mike Phillips, Ospreys, Wales and star of the 2009 British & Irish Lions, has become an ambassador for the children's charity touraid.

touraid was established to provide youngsters from developing countries a chance to play rugby in the UK - to tour for a week, friends for a lifetime.

The key objective of the Charity is to create lasting legacies between those that become involved in the touring teams; to establish educational, social and economic links between the visiting children and schools and clubs in this country. Following the success of the many rugby tours that have brought disadvantaged children to the UK, other sports and the performing arts are now covered by the touraid model.

Mike Phillips joins former Springbok and World Cup winner, Chester Williams; London Irish and England World Cup Winner Mike Catt; Wasps and England star Danny Cipriani; and former England Women's captain, Sue Day as Ambassadors who help promote the Charity's activities and lend their time and energy to the cause.

He said, "I am very proud to have been chosen to be an Ambassador for touraid. I work with young people whenever I can now because I remember what an amazing experience it was for me to meet professional players when I was younger.

"I am looking forward to meeting the kids when they come over and also seeing first hand how rugby can have a positive effect on their communities. Watching some footage of kids living on the dumps in Cambodia was distressing but seeing how happy they were when they came over to the UK to experience the buzz of the sport was testament to the great job that touraid does. Through working with touraid we will see rugby and other sports making a difference to their lives."

Newport County third round preview

Newport County take a break from league action on Saturday when they entertain Braintree Town at Spytty Park in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

After opening up an eight point gap at the top of the Blue Square South, County will be looking for a successful cup run after their failure at the same stage in the FA Cup last month.

Their opponents are currently seventh in the Blue Square South and only one point of the play-offs; Braintree will, therefore, present a challenge to high-flying County, having only lost one match on their travels this season.

Confidence is in abundance at Spytty Park following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat of Bromley. It took time to break down their well organised visitors, but Danny Rose struck the opening goal when Scott Rogers found him in space on top of the penalty area, and his powerful strike found the bottom-right corner. The points were confirmed in stoppage time when Ashan Holgate weaved wonderfully well into space down the right flank, and his cross found Kerry Morgan who’s diving header sealed the win.

With a testing match in prospect, County will look to their home form to see them into the first round proper and the incentive of drawing one of the major clubs in the Blue Square Premier. The likes of Oxford United, Luton Town, York City or Cambridge United could be install should the Welsh club overcome Braintree on Saturday, ko. 3pm.

There sad news for Newport followers this week, however, with the news that Richard Walden, who played for the club during the glory years of the late 1970’s and early 80’s, passed away. “Rolls Royce”, as Walden was known, had been suffering from myeloid leukaemia and was considered the best right-back to have ever played for County. Sympathies go to his wife and family.

Welsh camp upbeat over RWC draw

Jason Lewis is remaining upbeat on Wales's chances in next year's women's Rugby World Cup, despite being drawn in the same group as defending champions New Zealand.

The Welsh coach has also seen his side grouped with South Africa and Australia and will be fully aware New Zealand have never lost an international to any of the sides in the pool so will be firm favourites to qualify automatically from the group.

The Black Ferns are the undisputed queens of rugby, having dominated the women’s game at the highest level for the last decade. They haven’t lost a Test since 2001 and have won the last three World Cups in 1998, 2002 and 2006.

Lewis saw first hand earlier this week just how good the Kiwis are when he saw them destroy England A 48-3 at Esher in a prelude to their second Test against England on Saturday.

“New Zealand deserve to be seeded one,” he said referring to the World Cup. “There isn’t any question about that as they’ve set the benchmark for a number of years.

“It’s a tough group but my point of view is that you would expect every group to be tough in a World Cup. But as a group, if we have any ambitions of making it all the way to the final, then you have to play against the best, and beat them, to get there.

“We very rarely play against teams like New Zealand, South Africa or Australia so that is a huge bonus for us. We are under no illusions as to what lies ahead but the girls have accepted the challenge and are willing to tackle it head on.”

Lewis has an early opportunity to run the rule over his squad when they take on Sweden in an international at the Vale Resort on November 28. The World Cup may not be until August 2010, but the Welsh coach is already thinking of the bigger picture by giving hooker Becky Newton, fly-half Elinor Snowsill and winger Caryl James their international bows while another newcomer, backrower Lisa Newton, starts from the bench.
